- Fake swarm/hive split!
- May 18th, 2014
One of my hives didn't make it through the winter. Both still had plenty of stores, and I left the dead-out all spring for the live one to rob out, but they didn't. I don't know if they didn't need the stores, have an extremely low robbing drive or if the dead bees freaked them out, like an insect haunted house. Thursday, the 15th, I finally took out the deep box, and one of the supers. I wanted to increase my hives, so I took one of the mediums from the live hive that had brood, and I think it had the queen, and moved it to where the dead hive was. It also got two mediums of stores from the dead hive. It is probably too early to do so, but we will see. After all, a swarm in May is worth a bale of hay. By this comming Friday any queencells should be capped, and the Friday after, she should emerge. A week after she should fly and by the time a month has passed, she should be laying and everything. This means I need to check to make sure there are queencells after Friday, and if there are multiple cells I can place them with other frames in nucs. *fingers crossed*
